During the 5th and 6th centuries present day England was conquered and settled by Germanic races, the Angles and Saxons. The Anglo-Saxon domination of the island lasted until 1066, when the Normans led by William Duke of Normandy fought the Anglo-Saxon army led by King Harold at the Battle of Hastings.
