Traditional Toys
Traditional toys have been making a huge come back over the past few years, they are a much cheaper alternative to a lot of the high price modern toys on the market today. They also have a much longer playing span than their newer counterparts.
Traditional Wooden Shut The Box and Shut The Box travel edition, has been around pubs many years and may date back to the 12th century. It is simply played with two dice and a box with numbers 1 to 9 where each can be discretely covered with a hinged mechanism. During each round, a player repeatedly throws the die to "cover the tiles" of the box. The round ends when no tile can be covered on a throw and the players count each successful turn as one for a score. for example you "put down" the number 3, 5, 9 you get three points.
The goal is to cover all numbers, that is, "shut the box", which results in finishing that game. You do that for five times, or rounds. In recent years variations of the game have become more prominent due its growing popularity.
Family Bingo or Housie, a game using a printed ticket of 15 numbers on three lines; most commonly played in the UK, Australia and New Zealand. It contains twenty-seven spaces, arranged in nine columns by three rows. Each row contains five numbers and four blank spaces. Each column contains either one, two, or very rarely three, numbers: The first column contains numbers from 1 to 9, The second column numbers from 10 to 19, The third 20 to 29 and so on up until the last column, which contains numbers from 80 to 90.
No one seems to know the origins of the original Bingo but it would appear to have been a gambling game. Now a multi player game for all the family to enjoy, none more than on rainy days stuck in your caravan or tent on holiday.
Juggling Diablo a great circus toy of skill and hand eye co ordination and great fun Diabolo is the correct name but the common mispelling has become the norm. Derived the name from the Greek dia bolo, roughly meaning 'across throw'. Diablo's come in many bright colours and sizes and probally originated from the Chinese yo yo in the 12th century.
The most basic act of diabolo manipulation is to cause the spool to spin while it is suspended from the string. This is commonly achieved by dragging the string across the axle in such a way that the friction causes the spool to roll.
By repeatedly lifting one of the handsticks while providing slack with the other the RPMs can be increased as the cup "rolls" down the string, the lifting hand is typically the users dominant hand, Eg left/right.
This method is known as acceleration Here are a few better known tricks. Toss. The diabolo is thrown in the air and then caught. High toss. The diabolo is thrown high in the air and caught. Trapeze/stopover. The diabolo is swung around the stick and caught on the string.
